Fatal Crash on CR 209
Two people were killed this evening in Clay County when a crash occurred on Russell Rd (CR 209) near Pine Hollow Road, Green Cove Springs just before 9pm. In addition to the two vehicles driven by the two adult victims, a CCSO on-duty patrol deputy was also involved. The deputy sustained only minor injuries and is okay. Deputy Bryant Wiggins was driving on CR 209 when he spotted one of the crashed cars in the ditch and was slowing down to assist when he crashed into the second vehicle which was located/stopped in the unlit street. There were passengers in each of the three involved vehicles. No passengers were seriously injured. The deputy's car also held an inmate who was being transported to jail. That inmate was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure and is okay as well.
The FHP is on scene and is the lead agency on this traffic fatality investigation. The FHP will be the source for further details once next of kin notification is complete, etc. A section of Russell Road remains closed until further notice (between Sandridge Rd and Pine Hollow Rd.) Thank you.
