Wednesday, January 2, 2013

January 2-3, 2012

Original Release:
January 2, 2013

*Victim/deceased: Kayla Marie Beynon, DOB 5/10/89
*Suspect/deceased: Zachary Robert Johns, DOB 3/17/89

CCSO deputies and detectives responded tonight at 6:45pm to an apartment inside the Cottages complex in the Oakleaf community where a shooting took place. Two adult residents (one male and one female) in their twenties were found deceased inside the apartment at 3750 Silver Bluff Blvd. Detectives believe it was a murder-suicide shooting incident committed by the male. The couple is not married and no other persons were in the home when the shooting occurred.
We’ve received several questions this morning related to this incident. Please see the information below in response.
The couple (Beynon/Johns) had one child together, a 6 month old boy. Kayla Beynon also had a 2 year old son. These children remain in the care of Beynon’s mother.
The weapon used to commit this murder-suicide was a 40-caliber handgun.
There was only one previous call for service at the address involving law enforcement. A deputy responded to the condo one month ago at the request of Kayla Beynon to stand by (keep the peace) while she removed personal belongings from the condo. We are told by family members that Beynon continued living in the home with Johns even after this call for service.
