The CCSO Robbery–Homicide Unit continues its investigation into a suspicious death that was discovered Friday (original release below). Investigators confirm that the body found in the burning car is that of a woman. The female victim’s identity remains unknown. The car in which the body was located is a 1995 Mercury Sable registered in Pennsylvania. Investigators are working to determine the car’s actual owner and any reason for it being in our area.
This is an active investigation. Autopsy results on cause of death are pending.

DEATH INVESTIGATION UNDER WAY IN CLAY COUNTY

At 11:30am today Forestry and Fire Rescue personnel responded to a small woods fire that was spotted in the 3400 block of SR 21 south of Middleburg. Upon entering the wooded area they discovered it was a car that was on fire. These personnel extinguished the fire and then discovered a person’s body in the car. The CCSO was notified at 12:30pm about the discovery of the body, and CCSO deputies and detectives responded to the scene.
At this time, this incident is considered a death investigation. We are not yet able to divulge if the victim is a male or female, or the exact type of car or the exact location of the body inside the vehicle. SR 21 remains open (Blanding Blvd.).
