MEDIA RELEASE: UPDATE
Friday, February 17, 2012

Early this morning the Clay County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard escorted the body of slain CCSO Detective David White to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Jacksonville. Agency members will remain with him at all times. Following a routine autopsy, White will be transported to the funeral home the family selects. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made, but that information will be communicated as soon as it is decided.

Regarding, Detective Matthew Hanlin, he remains at OPMC this morning where he is recovering from surgery to repair a gunshot wound to his left arm. Both Hanlin and White were wearing protective vests when the shooting occurred. The surgery overnight went well and Detective Hanlin did regain consciousness and was able to speak to CCSO members visiting him. To his credit, Det. Hanlin’s concern is for the family of Det. White, his partner. Like Det. White, Det. Hanlin joined the CCSO nine years ago. Both men have served in both Patrol and Investigative assignments before taking on their duties in the CCSO Street Crimes Section. These detectives have been at the forefront of our agency’s efforts to locate and close down dangerous meth labs in our county.

At 9am today our agency will observe a moment of silence. At 10am, Sheriff Rick Beseler will convene a meeting of his command staff to plan how our agency will honor Detective White and assist his family with funeral arrangements and services. In addition, agency chaplains and crisis first responders have been in action since the shooting occurred and will continue to check on our personnel throughout the day.

Pending:
• Information related to the five suspects questioned and detained overnight. We will have more information on them following the 10am meeting to release.
• Identification and background on the sixth suspect (deceased).
• Review of Det. White’s personnel file and to compile some biographical information about his years of service (here and with U.S. Army)
• While requests for interviews are being accepted, it is most likely that an afternoon press conference will be planned versus scheduling one-on-one interviews today.
• Our agency will work today with the family of Det. White to determine if a family spokesperson is available to speak to the media at any point.
• FDLE agents remain at the scene on Alligator Blvd. and weather conditions have slowed their progress; scene processing will continue throughout the day.

Please expect another update at approximately 11:30am today. Thank you.
Mary Justino, CCSO PIO
