Man Arrested for Murder of Child
Monday, August 1, 2011

August 1, 2011

A first-degree murder warrant has been obtained by CCSO Homicide Unit detectives for 22-year-old Joshua Adam Blakeslee for the murder of a 17-month-old male child, Julius Caesar Ruiz. The child's death was discovered by his mother upon waking and was immediately reported to authorities on the morning of September 11, 2010, at their home at 1838 Killarn Circle in Middleburg. The investigation revealed that the child was in the custody of Blakeslee, also a resident of the home, on the evening of Sept. 10th. Detectives determined that Blakeslee, the fiancÚ' of the child's mother (not the biological father), was responsible for the injuries that led to the child's death. The exact cause of death (autopsy result) is not releasable at this time.

During the investigation, Blakeslee left Clay County and moved to Indiana. In December 2010 Dearborn County, Indiana authorities arrested him for robbery, theft and possession of a controlled substance. He has been in custody there since that time. On July 26, 2011, the first-degree-murder warrant was obtained in Clay County and Blakeslee is now also held, pending extradition, on this murder charge with no bond. The timeline for his return to Clay County (to face prosecution on the murder charge) will depend on the closure of his cases/charges in Indiana.

Attached is a copy of the arrest warrant and a prior booking photo for media use. Blakeslee's prior arrests include an April 2007 aggravated battery arrest (booking photo attached) and a May 2010 arrest for theft by sudden snatching. Media may contact the agency in Indiana for additional information regarding his arrest there and most current booking photo. (812-537-8700)

This PIO and the detective assigned to this investigation, Det. Dan Matos, have been in contact with the victim's family. The family has expressed a strong desire to decline any requests for press interviews. They continue to grieve the loss of their child, Julius Ruiz.

Thank you,
Mary Justino
