Woman Killed; Suspect Arrested in Clay County
The Clay County Sheriff's Office responded to a garage apartment located in the Green Cove Springs Lake Asbury neighborhood at 1am today after a resident reported a home invasion had occurred with injuries. A woman was found at the home deceased and a suspect has been arrested. The location of the incident is an isolated property located 268 Arthur Moore Drive, Green Cove Springs. Detectives do not believe the incident was a home invasion (as initially reported by the suspect), but instead, a domestic violence related homicide.
The victim is 25-year-old Keisha Short, a resident of the garage apartment located behind the main home on the property. Both buildings are rental properties. The arrested suspect (booking sheet attached) is 22-year-old Kyle Helms, also a resident of the garage apartment. Short and Helms were boyfriend-girlfriend and had lived in the rental garage apartment for approximately six (6) months. The victim is originally from North Carolina. Neither the victim nor the suspect has criminal histories in our county and there is no record of past incidents or calls for service to their address prior to this morning. Detectives believe that the couple had an argument (unknown cause) that lead to a physical assault on the victim and her death. The exact cause of death remains part of the investigation pending autopsy results. The victim's body was taken to the Medical Examiner's Office in Jacksonville. The victim's next of kin have been notified.
The residents/renters of the main home located on the property at 268 Arthur Moore Drive expressed that they are not interested in speaking with the press about the incident.
